The Air Jordan 3 was designed by Tinker Hatfield. There were the first custom Air Jordans to feature a visible air unit on the heel, the new Jumpman Logo, an elephant print trim, and tumble leather for a luxury look. These custom kicks were also famous for the humorous ads depicting Spike Lee in the "Mars and Mike" ad campaign. This was one Nike's most successful advertisment campaigns for Air Jordans.
